“Mi Tular” in antico etrusco significa “Io sono il confine”.
In questo lembo di terra ghiacciata incastonato nel Mar Glaciale Artico, orsi polari e uomini si contendono un confine invisibile.
La parola “Tular” riporta alla mente il mito dell’Ultima Thule, l’ultima isola al di là del mondo conosciuto. Per lungo tempo le Svalbard – isole dove in inverno la temperatura scende fino a -30°, la luce è un miraggio che dura poche ore al giorno e gli orsi polari superano numericamente gli abitanti – sono state meta di lavoro per un periodo limitato, luogo di passaggio in cui fare qualche soldo per costruire poi la propria vita sulla terraferma.
Tuttavia, negli ultimi anni qualcosa è cambiato: le persone che decidono di rimanere sono sempre più numerose.
Ad oggi, si contano circa 2500 abitanti e 3500 orsi polari.
Una società variegata e multietnica: 40 le nazionalità presenti sull’arcipelago, anche grazie al Trattato delle Svalbard, il cui articolo numero 3 sancisce la piena libertà di diventare cittadino legittimo senza necessità di visto.

It’s here, in this frozen land nestled in the Arctic Ocean, where bears and humans contend an invisible border. “Tular” reminds the Ultima Thule myth, the last island beyond the known world.
For a very long time Svalbard, islands where the winter temperature goes under -30°, the sunlight is a mirage which lasts few hours per day and the polar bears outnumber the inhabitants, has always been just a temporary place. A place where to work for a limited timeframe; Svalbard were a place where to make some money for building your life in mainland.
But something has changed during the last years: there are more and more people willing to stay. Today there are around 2.500 inhabitants and 3.500 polar bears.
A multi-ethnic society: around 40 different nationalities live in the Archipelago thanks to the Svalbard Treaty that on the article 3 states the anyone can live there without any Visa requirement.
